June Newsletter – UTW Day 2017

This year’s UTW Day event at the L.A. Headquarters

On UTW Day 2017,  the UTW L.A. team practiced what Unfuck The World stands for: Positive. Local. Action. We gave a make-over to 2nd Chance For Sobriety, a sober living house in Los Angeles.

Seventy men ages 20 to 45 live at 2nd Chance, most of them by court order, all for drug related charges. Our goal was to beautify three areas: the Visitation Room, the Dining Area and the Back Yard. Leading up to UTW Day, our team spent weeks planning, fund raising and asking for help with needed items and materials.

Dining Area: Before

Back Yard: Before

Individuals and companies supported the project with monetary and in-kind donations.

On UTW Day, team members, volunteers, residents of 2nd Chance worked tirelessly, and together, we were able to completely transform the space.

May Newsletter – Recharging the batteries in Ecuador

Recharging the batteries

We live in a crazy busy world. Our minds never slow down, we are used to doing three things at the same time, and when we get too stressed out, accidents happen or we become sick. That is why, with just a few weeks left until the 5th Annual Unfuck The World Day, UTW creator Maike is taking a vacation. You may think that sounds crazy with so much still to do, but often, stepping back from a project for a while will lead to being more productive in the long run.

“I am currently in Ecuador, recharging the batteries. Here, time moves slower, people seem to appreciate life more than we do in the USA. I wonder, is that because they have less? Back home, we take so much for granted. Everything is available at the snap of a finger. But are we content? We never seem to be happy in the moment, always wanting more.”

UTW creator Maike with two of the kids

“I was lucky to be invited to visit Santa Maria de la Esperanza, an orphanage/foster house near Montañita, a small cluster of buildings nestled on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The place is home to sixty children. They live there in the care of five women who have dedicated their lives to being “tías’. The kids’ ages range from three months to seventeen years; they have all experienced severe mental and/or physical abuse.”

Santa Maria de la Esperanza

“When I went the first time, I wasn’t sure what to expect.Would they be reserved towards me, a stranger? Would I see sadness and fear in the children’s eyes? I couldn’t have been farther from the truth. I don’t think I have ever experienced more love and joy. I barely stepped into the beautiful courtyard, when I already had kids all over me. One little boy literally jump into my arms, directing me around  and telling me stories. The fact that my Spanish is basic didn’t seem to matter. I met the staff, consisting of the tías, a cook and two child therapists, and all the children, and each one welcomed me with a big smile and a hug.”

Celebrating one of the girls’ birthday

“I’ve been back several times since, attending one of their weekly music classes and a birthday party. I got the chance to get to know the kids a little better, and all I can say is that these children are happy and full of hope for the future. And without talking about it, they are teaching me to be content and appreciate the moment.”

Perhaps this has made you think about wanting to support a foster child in your area. There are many ways to do that, i.e. by being a mentor. Please reach out to local organizations to find out more. In the USA, you can visit the Foster Coalition’s website.

April Newsletter – Join us for UTW Day!

Only 2 more months

Only 2 more months until Unfuck The World Day. Crazy! There is still a lot to do, and at the UTW Headquarters in L.A. speed is picking up. Awesome volunteers are joining us in putting our plan into action – Positive Local Action – and everyone is pretty excited!

What is this positive local action that we are so excited about? We are going to make a difference in the lives of 70 men. We will give a makeover to a sober living house in Los Angeles where these men currently live; paint the walls, bring in new furniture and art, install ceiling fans, beautify the backyard by adding planter boxes and trellises, a mural and much more.

Positive Local Action

Here some before and (mock-up) after pictures to give you an idea of we plan to do: the Visitation Room will get painted, we will switch out the pool table for a nicer one (the one that’s there now is beyond repair), we will build and install benches and shelves, and add two ceiling fans.

After

We are also going to give the Dining Area and the Back Yard a new, fresher look.

March Newsletter: A Bus For Our Outreach Work

The Goal Is Near

Thanks to our very generous supporters, we have been able to raise over $5,000 in only two months! Now it’s time to start shopping! We are looking for a used short bus that we can turn into the Mobile Outreach Center for our non-profit, A Million Drops.

A bus we looked at last week.  UTW team member Preston approves.

Wrapped in A Million Drops’ bright and happy orange logo, everyone will know it’s us when we pull up!

We will drive around Hollywood to find homeless youth and young adults in need, and provide them with basic necessities, like toiletries, sock, backpacks and sleeping bags.

We will also take the time to talk with them individually or in small groups and find out how else we can help.

But that’s not all. Every few months, we will turn the bus into a mobile gallery, housing ‘Unsheltered‘, our recurring art show featuring works by homeless youth and young adults.

We still need to raise a little more money, so we can afford a bus that won’t break down after a couple of months, and to remove the seats and and outfit it with shelves and cabinets. The goal is near!

A Place Where Children Can Feel Safe

Instead of punishing disruptive kids or sending them to the principal’s office, a school in Baltimore has created a safe space, called the Mindful Moment Room.

What a great way to help children learn how to handle high-stress situations that have become a part of their lives nowadays.
