UTW Day 2014
Events and Positive Local Actions in 10 countries around the globe in Asia, Europe, Oceania, and North America.
The official UTW Day 2014 event at the UTW Headquarters in LOS ANGELES
Last year’s UTW DAY event in L.A. was a day-long, zero-waste event open to all ages, featuring live performances on indoor and outdoor stages by bands, spoken word artists, and DJs. Representatives of local groups and organizations that are taking positive action in Los Angeles were there to inspire and network with people who were looking for a way to make a positive impact in their communities. In addition, we had a raffle and silent auction featuring items that were donated to us by local businesses and artists, a live artist, food vendors, and a tent where artists and a face painter offered fun activities for kids (and grown-ups), free chair massage, and more …
The first volunteers came at 8:00 am to unload the truck and set up tents and tables, hang banners and string lights and put together the bar, ticket and merch displays. What an amazing group of people! Some of them were long time friends, others complete strangers who had responded to our calls for help on Facebook and VolunteerMatch. The vibe was amazing, and within a few hours, they turned an empty parking lot into a beautiful mini fair …
At 2:00 pm the first visitors started coming in, and many of them hung out all day, enjoying the beautiful California weather and great live music performances by bands from L.A. and the Bay Area while having an ice cool beer, or grabbing a bite from the Hungry Nomad Food Truck. Volunteers had their hands full with checking guest lists, selling tickets, helping with movings bands on and off stages, selling beer and wine, organizing the raffle and silent auction, overseeing the merch table and and and. What an amazing group of dedicated supporters we had! We can’t thank everyone enough. At 3:00 pm the first musical act hit the stage, and from then on, every 30 minutes, switching between inside and outside stages, a new band went on, so nobody had to stand around being bored, waiting for the next act to finish their soundcheck …. 🙂
Many visitors took the opportunity to learn about the good work being done by local non-profits (and some even got inspired to join them), like Laundry Love an initiative of JustOne in partnership with individuals, groups and local laundromats throughout the U.S. that helps to wash the clothes and bedding of individuals and families living in poverty.
Laundry Love were also last year’s chosen non-profit to benefit from the money that was raised through our raffle and silent auction.
Another local group that was represented at our event was L.A. Green Grounds who help establish edible gardens in areas that are part of the so-called food desert …
Unfuck The World Day was a day to make friends and get inspired, to realize that it’s easy to do good, and that no good action is too small!
Thanks to everyone who bought raffle tickets or bid on the items that were part of the silent auction we were able to raise the amount of $1,443.00 for charity!
A BIG SHOUT-OUT TO OUR SPONSORS
A big event like this doesn’t come for free, even for a non-profit… event insurance, liquor license, flyers, and and and … and we would never be able to pull this off without the generous support of our sponsors! Thank you to Out Of Frame for providing tents, tables, chairs, and much more; CD Rollout for making the cool banners; Lenny Marvin’s for letting us borrow bar tables, umbrellas, and benches; Mudhen Merch Co. for printing shirts for free; Green Set for string lights and green carpet; Hollywood Studio Gallery for framing the art for the silent auction at no charge!
The official UTW Day 2014 event at Skipper Christian Beach, PHILIPPINES organized by Gershom Pertacorta
In 2014, the Philippines joined us again for the second time to celebrate Unfuck The World Day with us. Melissa Flores and Gershom Pertacorta, with the help of their friends, organized an event on Skipper Christian Beach with a big outdoor stage featuring 12+ reggae bands, many of them all the way from Manila, who didn’t mind the three hour bus ride to Olongapo City …
Everybody was super excited, even the City of Olongapo, who supported Unfuck The World Day. Not only did they agree to provide the stage this year, they even had the Office Of Transportation deliver it to the beach, and they also donated a 55 kg bag of rice to help Gershom and Melissa with the overwhelming task of feeding the many musicians, artists and volunteers. We are happy to say that a percentage of the money raised by the UTW Headquarters in this year’s Indiegogo fundraising campaign was sent to Gershom to pay for the bus tickets for the bands and for some of the food! Thank you again to everybody who donated to us!
People camped out on Skipper Christian Beach to enjoy a day and a night of music and art installations that had been created over a few days leading up to the event by artists from Manila and Olongapo City, much to the delight of the many children who were there with their parents..
Children had fun with the playful art installations created right there on the beach by Manila artist Sonny A Balanga
One of the most beautiful parts of UTW Day at Skipper Christian Beach was members of the indigenous tribe of the Aeta people, one of the first African natives of Asia, and the original inhabitants of the Philippines, joining the event. The Aeta people are a peaceful and non-violent indigenous people with their own traditions, customs, identity, and their own language called Sambal. They are suffering racial discrimination and receive little recognition and support from the government, and during the past fifty years they have lost much of their ancestral domain to land grabbers, loggers and mining operations backed by politicians and officials.
When Gershom went to visit with the Aeta people to tell them about Unfuck The World Day and what it is that we are trying to achieve, they right away expressed the wish to become part of the event. It took a few more conversations and Gershom had to figure out how to transport the Aeta people down to the beach – after all, they live in a remote area up the mountain from Olongapo City – but he made it happen! Not only did they come down to the beach, the Aeta also helped building the stage, became part of the art installations and officially opened the event at 9:00 am on Saturday June 7 by performing some of their traditional dances. I can’t even begin to tell you how deeply touched and honored we here at the L.A. Headquarters are that the Aeta people were willing to come down the mountain to participate in the celebrations of Unfuck The World Day 2014.
The official UTW Day 2014 event in VANCOUVER, WA, organized by Jamie Brebner
“We have secured Turtle Park at 7th and Main in downtown Vancouver as our location – a cement park that used to be the transit center… kinda poor but a perfect location to bring good vibes to … 🙂
We had a stage with live music headed up by Jeremiah Lehman, a staple in the downtown music scene, known for stripping down songs and singing them in a soulful bluesy way. Jeremiah invited some of his talented friends to join him for a phenomenal jam session. We had eight tents: • The Ally Coalition did a photo booth to raise awareness in support of LGBTQ equality • Jeanette Weaver, a craft artist, taught us how to make useable things out of what might otherwise be thrown away • Lovers Not Fighters, a pit bull rescue group, had a puppy kissing booth and gave out information on the breed and how to adopt or foster a safe pit. • Birkenstock NW brought awareness to Souls4Soles, a group the collects shoes to be given to those without • Jenese and Elliott talked about how staying fit and active provides us with healthy minds, lower medical expenses and sets a positive example to our youth • John and Anna of the Forestry Center handed out Woodsy The Owl litter bags with stickers, tattoos and bookmarks for kids • Pretty Petal Henna did henna tattoos and talked about a non-profit set up to help terminally ill kids.
Our café/pub, Brewed, gave away free drinks and popcorn, and we had a voting jar where people could vote for their favorite UTW organization represented at the park. The winning tent received $300 cash from Brewed for their cause.” – Jamie

It was about providing a platform for people to do good in Hagerstown, and the world over.We started at 8:00 am by helping our local chapter of Habitat For Humanity, later through the day, we collected canned goods at the local Walmart and volunteered at a nursing home. The official Unfuck The World Day 2014 event in SWIFT CURRENT, SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA, organized by Laura Peterson
Laura organized a “Monopoly Mayhem Party“! She wrote: “Come on out and join the fun! $10 will get you $500 Monopoly Money to use at the party. The goal is to be the person with the most Monopoly Money by 9:30 pm. That person will win a prize (to be announced). There will be all kinds of yard games set up to challenge your friends to increase your Monopoly Money. There will also be a fun poker table that will accept only your Monopoly money for wagers. You can also increase your Monopoly Money by giving your friends dares and challenges! (All must be legal and in good taste!). We will also have a 50/50 draw at the end of the party. (This will require cash to participate rather than the Monopoly money which will be good for everything else you can do at the party.) There will also be face painting, a coloring area, and clay modeling available for the younger children or even us big kids if that’s what we want to do! With any luck we will also have a performance of an original Unfuck The World song performed by some up and coming music artists in Swift Current and other musical entertainment is pending. All proceeds raised are being donated to Fresh Start who run the new youth homeless shelter in Swift Current …so come on out, bring your friends and what do you say we do a little something to Unfuck The World???” – Laura
